Background Info:
Slavery:
Slavery existed in the US from the 1500's until 1864. European conquerers went to Africa and kidnapped people, brought them to the US and then made them slaves. There was a fight between the North and the South over slavery. The North states didn't have slavery, while the South states had slavery. Then there was the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, that freed all of the slaves.

Plessy vs. Ferguson:
This was the Supreme court trial that started when a black man refused to exit a train reserved for white people. After some time the court established the "separate but equal rule," which resulted in the segregation of everything. Bathrooms, schools, trains, buses, water fountains, etc. They were all segregated.

Jim Crow Laws:
This was a white man who would paint himself black and essentially make fun of black people. A little while later there were these laws called Jim Crow laws that went as far to say that if there was a white man and a black man walking on the same sidewalk, the black man would have to get off the sidewalk and let the white man pass before continuing on his way.

On of which was when Rosa Parks refused to move from the front of the bus because the back was full and she get kicked off and jailed for it. Another was peaceful protests. Sometimes black people would got to restaurants and asked to be served and if they got denied they would just keep sitting there until they got kicked out. Once the got kicked out they would be replaced with more black people. These were called sit-ins.
