Gulf of Tonkin
Involvement:
The Gulf of Tonkin was the time when the U.S actually entered the war against North Vietnam. U.S's hopes were to defeat North Vietnam to stop the spread of Communism. They used the incident when the USS Maddox was fired on by nearby torpedo boat, who thought they were being attacked. LBJ used this to request more material and more soldiers. He also asked for a blank check to expand the war as he saw fit. A blank check is pretty much a check with someone signature on it, and the person who is receiving the check get the put however much money they want on it. Congress agreed and authorized the authority to use all necessary measures to repel any army attack. During the war, a U.S base was destroyed and everyone in there was killed.

Ouch Warfare:
Ouch Warfare was strategic air powered advocates who recommend massive bombing campaigns against North Vietnam. They said they could get Ho Chi Minh to surrender in one month and it would improve ARVN morale. They also said they would win the war by the exposing money and material, and avoid mass manpower losses. There was a certain criteria for bombing which was they had to have military advantage of the target, there had to be little to no risk of an American aircraft, there couldn't be the danger of drawing other countries into the war, and there couldn't be the danger of mass civilian deaths.
