Modern Feminism
The Changing Role of Women:
In the 1950's women were seen as wives, homemakers, and mothers. They were expected to clean, cook dinner, watch the kids, and just be a house wife. Towards the 60's and 70's they made this thing called the "Freedom Trash Can," where they would throw all of their beauty products, hair products, feminine hygiene products, and anything associated with women. This was to show that they wanted change so they could be equal with the men. A woman named Betty Friedan wrote a book about questioning their role in society, because once they clean the house, take care of the kids, and make dinner, what are they supposed to do now?

Effects:
Sexism is when someone is discriminated because of their gender. Sexism started to arise an “Ms” started to become popular instead of “miss” (denoting single) and “mrs” (married). There was also a problem within politics because there are only 19 women in congress at the time. Also there was conflict in business because women only get paid 59 cents to every dollar a man makes. By 1990 there were more female undergraduates than male. But as women started to reject the housewife role and chose careers kids were pushed back and birth rates plummeted and divorce rates skyrocketed, as women acted on their unhappiness. There was also a fight for reproductive rights. A lot of states made birth control illegal as ordered forms he Catholic Church. The Supreme Court case Griswald v. Connecticut rules that such laws were unconstitutional. So the result of that was the premarital sex rate skyrocketed as well as cohabitation, which, means couples were living together before getting married. Then followed a legal battle over abortion, which is still going on today.
